I was ready. I decided to take the leap and order parts for a new, more robust, bike. It was a process that took some time with all the necessary discussions and decisions forged with the boys down at Formby Cycles, but this time, I had to be sure.
I would drop in to the store every now and again to see how it was all coming along, and to make sure I understood what I was to do if parts failed or broke. It was strange because when the guys showed me how to rectify such problems, they didn’t freak-out, start screaming or kick anything, and I had built my fix-routine on the premise that success depended on those things.
In the mean time I was trying to find a flight to Eastern Canada, and when Thomas Cook found me one on the cheap I nearly bit their collective hand off. The only catch was that it was a few days earlier than optimal. At least now I had a date. I would leave on 20th June.
Shortly afterwards, the bits and pieces began to resemble a bicycle. Black met red in a stupendous mechanical symphony. It wasn’t quite done, but let me tell you, the parts had come together to create a devilish looking brute. It was an absolute creature. Ali, the mechanic most responsible for this creation, turned to me, his eyes alive with a wild flicker. He raised his oiled, weathered hands to the heavens and screamed “IT’S ALIVE, IT’S ALIIIIIVE!”, shaking under the weight of his demonic triumph.
No, but seriously, he was pleased.
